Donyale Luna was the first Black Supermodel. She appeared on the scene in 1965 when she moved to New York City from her native Detroit, Michigan to start her modeling career. Born Peggy Freeman she was discovered by photographer David McCage. A sketch of the 6’2 beauty was published in Harper’s Bazaar in 1965. Donyale was the first black super model to appear on the cover of Vogue Magazine. She appeared on the British issued magazine in 1966. She never had a chance to blossom as a major force in the fashion industry as she died at 33 from a drug overdoes in Italy. Read more of this trail blazer here.
