Iconic singer, songwriter, and actor David Bowie is dead. Word of his death Sunday was posted on the artist’s official social media accounts and confirmed by his representative. Bowie died on Sunday, two days after his 69th birthday. A posting on his Facebook page says he was surrounded by his family when he died after an 18-month battle with cancer. He’s survived by his children, film director Duncan Jones, 15-year-old daughter “Lexi,” and his second wife, the global supermodel and cosmetics business titan Iman (seen with him in the photo).

Always a master of reinvention, Bowie released his first hit, Space Oddity, in the summer of 1969. Three years later, he recreated himself for the glam rock era as Ziggy Stardust with the hit single Starman.  In 1975, he re-emerged as “David Bowie” with his first major U.S. hit, Fame and the successful Young Americans album. Bowie’s penchant for successful reinventions of himself and musical innovations continued through the release of Blackstar, his 25th studio album, in which he invited major jazz musicians to join him for this phase of his musical life. Blackstar was just released on Friday, January 8, his birthday.

Bowie (and his wife) were also noted philanthropists supporting various charities to make the world a better place ranging from HIV/AIDS, health issues of mothers and children, safety and well-being of women and girls, nutrition, and increasing humanitarian efforts to remove mines from war-torn areas around the globe.
