Get In the Know With Kim’s Tuesday WTLC News & Sports Headlines

The grand jury has returned in Texas with their finding in the death case of Sandra Bland. I have the story below in the national headlines where we #SayHerName. But first, here’s what’s going on in Indy:

There’s been a rash of shootings early Tuesday morning in Indy…

Around 5:15 a.m. this morning in the Herron Morton neighborhood near 19th and Broadway Streets, a person was shot in the leg. Police say that victim has been taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

In a separate incident, Metro Police are investigating another shooting not far away from the one on Broadway, on the city’s near-north side. This time, the victim was shot in the face near 25th Street and College Avenue. This shooting happened around 12:25 a.m. Police say that a man walked up to a van near that intersection and that’s when someone in the van pulled a gun. As he backed off and began to run away, the victim told police that’s when he was shot in his cheek. Police don’t know why he approached the van in the first place, nor do they have any suspects at this time. He’s being treated at IU-Methodist and is also expected to be ok.

The men accused of killing a pregnant pastor’s wife are due in court today to face charges in another violent case. Larry Taylor, Jr. and Jalen Watson are the main suspects in a sexual assault about a week before they allegedly broke into Amanda Blackburn’s home and killed her. Blackburn was at home with her young child at the time of the deadly attack. Taylor and Watson along with a third man are also suspects in a third break-in that took place around that same time.

Plainfield Police are determined to find the person making the online threats that shut down schools, a mall and a movie theater. Captain Jill Lees says they’ll keep at it, “until the end result.” The Plainfield Police Department is working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies, but say the process of tracking the suspect down is slow and tedious. Anyone with information about the threats is asked to call the non-emergency number at 317-839-8700.

Indiana lawmakers are almost certain to change the ISTEP test, even though schools are still waiting for all of the results of last year’s tests. The new standardized test has been plagued by problems from the beginning. Lawmakers say they’re open to a new test, but don’t know what that new test might be yet.

Holiday News:

There’s a real-life ‘Secret Santa’ in the Circle City. An anonymous donor gave $20,000 to the Indy Public Safety Foundation, so on Monday, 40 officers from different districts handed out $100 gift cards to those in need. The donor is hoping “Operation Ho Ho 5-0” will inspire other businesses to work with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to build community relations and to improve the quality of life for those in the city who are struggling.

Today is the big day of spreading Christmas cheer to some deserving Indianapolis kids and their families. Local promotions guru Amp Harris and his band of merry makers, which include George Hill from the Indiana Pacers and D’Qwell Jackson from the Indianapolis Colts, will give away toys to more than 300 youth and treat their families to a meal and a music-filled evening this evening at 6 p.m. According to Indiana Black Expo, the families were chosen from the Forest Manor Multi-Service Center.  Harris says he’s thankful to help bring a smile to a kid’s face during the holidays. The Zionsville Meijer’s store and Prime 47 in Carmel are also joining-in on the effort. If you’d also like to help, drop off a donation of your choosing—either monetary or a new toy, at Forest Manor Multi-Service Center in the 56-hundred block of East 38th Street.

National:

No indictment. That’s the result from a Texas grand jury in the death of a woman found hanged from a trash bag in a Texas jail cell. A grand jury there in Waller County, met Monday and didn’t return any indictments in the death of Sandra Bland. Bland’s death last July was ruled a suicide. The Chicago-area woman was arrested after a confrontation with a police officer during a traffic stop. The grand jury will meet again next month to consider other charges related to the case, specifically, charges related to the actions of the arresting officer.

A date is now set for a retrial of a Baltimore police officer accused of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Freddie Gray. Officer William Porter’s first trial ended in a last week in a hung jury. His retrial is due to start on June 13. Porter is the first of six police officers facing charges for Gray’s death to go to trial. The next officer, Caesar Goodson, is set to go to trial on January 6 after the holidays end. Goodson faces a charge of second-degree depraved heart murder.

We’re learning today more about the woman accused of driving her car through a crowd of people Sunday night on the Las Vegas Strip.  Oregon authorities say Lakeisha Holloway was driving on a suspended license. Vegas Police say Holloway told them she’d been living in her 1996 Oldsmobile with her three-year old daughter, staying in parking garages of casino resorts along the Strip. She also told investigators she was “stressed” because security guards kept ordering her to leave the properties. Holloway is now charged with killing one person and injuring more than 30 others.  We’re also learning more about some of the victims who were mowed down on the strip. Jessica Valenzuela, 32, from a Phoenix, Arizona suburb was the person who was killed. Also five members of the Delaware Valley University wrestling team and their coach were injured as they were walking to see the new Star Wars movie. These student athletes and their wrestling coach had just finished working out. They were preparing to compete in the Desert Duel tournament. Due to their injuries they didn’t end up participating in that tourney. They’re expected to return to their college campus today with their bumps and bruises.

In Sports:

The Pacers’ Paul George was held to a season-low seven points as the team lost to the Spurs 106-92 Monday night on the road in San Antonio at the AT&T Center. Rodney Stuckey had a team-high 16 points while George Hill and Jordan Hill each scored 15 for the Pacers. They’ve now lost two games in-a-row after a three-game winning streak. The team is back in action tonight on this Western road swing taking on the Sacramento Kings.

Indianapolis Weather:

Partly cloudy today with a high of 52 degrees.

Finally:

SpaceX is making space history. The commercial rocket maker founded by Tesla’s Elon Musk launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Monday and landed its first stage back on the ground vertically Monday night. By landing the segment and re-using it, SpaceX can cut the cost of launching cargo and people into space.
