The male students at Charles A. Tindley Prep Academy received an extra boost of encouragement to do well in school and in life this week. They were greeted by a village of positive black men to start their school day on Monday morning. Marion County Juvenile Judge Geoffrey Gaither put out the call with a group of organizers for men of this Indianapolis community to gather at 7:15 a.m. at the school located in the 4000 Block of North Sherman Drive to be positive role models that black boys can see in their communities and who care about them remaining focused on their educations.

More than 70 men from diverse professional and educational backgrounds answered the call. Many of them stayed at the all-male school for a rally with the students, after a morning of ‘high-fiving’ them into the school building for the start of class. The effort is a part of the work of the Men Supporting the Future, Positive Influence program, an urban initiative which is spreading across the nation.

Organizers invite men to stay involved with the students through mentoring and school/community involvement. They also invite more men from the Indianapolis community to join them by attending one of the upcoming student encouragement events. The next confirmed rallies will be held at:

  • John Marshall on Friday, October 30, at 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The school is located at 10101 East 38th Street in Indianapolis and
  • The Avondale Meadows Academy on Monday, November 2 at 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Avondale is located at 3980 Meadows Drive.
