Dylann Storm Roof, the accused gunman of the Emanuel AME Church shooting in Charleston, is slated to appear in court Thursday. The judge will hear the media’s argument to lift a ban on documents related to the case. Ninth Circuit Judge J.C. Nicholson put a gag order on those who are participating in the trial and withheld the release of key documents, including statements from witnesses, 911 police calls, and coroner’s reports. Judge Nicholson claims he decided to make this move because of the publicity surrounding the case and he wants to ensure that Roof receives a fair trial. The South Carolina Press Association is arguing that the press has the right to know details. Today will be Roof’s first court appearance since his bond hearing in June. Marvel’s Latest Comic Series Has a Hip-Hop Twist

One of Marvel’s latest comic series has a hip-hop twist. The comic company recently unveiled a new project that features over 50 classic hip-hop album covers with superheroes on them. Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso said the series was created to show how comics and hip-hop are intertwined. “For years, Marvel Comics and hip-hop culture have been engaged in an ongoing dialogue,” he said in a statement. “Beginning this October, we will shine a spotlight on the seamless relationship between those two unique forces.” Some of the album covers featured include The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Paid in Full, and Long Live A$APRead more.


Thousands Of Cops Looking for Missing Mexican Drug Lord

Mexico and the U.S. are joining forces in an effort to capture Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Guzman escaped from a top-security prison last weekend. Mexico has reportedly deployed nearly 10,000 police officers and 48 dogs to track down Guzman, who is recognized as one of the world’s most notorious drug lords. They’ve also set up 100 roadblocks on highways and posted 100,000 wanted posters. This is the second time Guzman has escaped from behind bars. Read more.


George H.W. Bush Hurts Neck In Fall

Former President George H.W. Bush encountered a serious injury at his home in Maine yesterday. According to his spokesperson, he hurt his neck during a fall. “41 fell at home in Maine today and broke a bone in his neck. His condition is stable — he is fine — but he’ll be in a neck brace,” spokesman Jim McGrath tweeted. The 91-year-old remains hospitalized. Although this injury isn’t life threatening, he has had other bouts with medical issues. Bush has a form of Parkinson’s disease. Read more.
