Actress Yaya DaCosta is stepping into the role of Whitney Houston this weekend, starring in Lifetime’s controversial new biopic about the life of the late superstar. The TV movie, titled “Whitney,” will center on the singer’s early years and her rocky relationship with husband Bobby Brown, who will be played by Arlen Escarpeta. R&B singer Deborah Cox is also involved, as her recordings of some of Whitney’s greatest hits will be used throughout. The movie marks the directorial debut of actress Angela Bassett and has been making headlines since Lifetime decided to go through with production over objections from several family members.

One of Whitney’s loved ones who does approve is Brown, who will be sitting down for an in-depth interview directly following the movie’s premiere. “Whitney” premieres this Saturday, January 17th at 8 p.m. Eastern on Lifetime.
