The numbers are in…

Fox’s new hip-hop drama “Empire” is off to a strong start. Building on its lead-in from the new season of “American Idol,” “Empire,” drew just under ten-million-viewers to its Wednesday night debut, to tie the September debut of ABC’s “How To Get Away With Murder” as the season’s top new show in the coveted 18-49 age demographic. Starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, “Empire” revolves around the head of a music empire whose ex-wife and three sons battle for control over his holdings.

With more than eleven-million viewers, “American Idol” was still the most watched show of night, although viewership was down about 33 percent from last year’s “Idol” season premiere. CBS’ telecast of the “People’s Choice Awards” also saw a big audience drop off from last year, pulling in just eight-point-six-million viewers over its two hour broadcast. That’s also about a 33 percent drop from the 2014 broadcast.
