An 8 year old was hospitalized after a melee between two Eastside families led to the boy being struck in the head with a 2-pound sledgehammer, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan police Department report.

According to a resident of the complex, the fight broke out around 8:30 p.m. in the Beechwood Gardens complex. What started as a minor altercation between two girls over alleged rumors being spread about the personal life of one of the girls. Family members then got involved, until approximately between 20  and 25 people were involved in the confrontations. The woman said she believed all the people involved in the fight were from the two families who are at odds.

The woman, who witnessed the fight, also added that the man who threw the sledgehammer was intending to hit the child and that a family member of the child who was stuck with the sledgehammer indeed brought it to the fracas.

IMPD reports they are investigating the incident. The boy is in Riley Hospital in critical condition. There was also a -year-old girl taken to Riley with minor injuries.
