Gospel singer Curtis Finch Jr.’s journey on American Idol came to an end today. The 25-year-old was the first of the Top 10 contestants to be eliminated.

Thursday’s night broadcast revealed that Finch shared the lowest vote with bilingual singer Devin Velez. The judges had the option of saving Finch, but after his performance R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly,” they made an unpopular choice to let him go.

As the crowd shouted “save, save, save,” Randy Jackson said, “We are not unanimous, unfortunately.”

Nicki Minaj was vocal about wanting Finch to stay around in the competition. “If you go home, I’m going home,” she said. However, the rapper was overruled but fellow judges Mariah Carey and Keith Urban.

Despite the initial shock of the elimination, all four judges did agree that they wanted to see “Brother Curtis,” as the affectionally called him, to step outside of his comfort zone when it came to song selection.

The top three contestants of the evening included South Carolina native Candice Glover and Texas natives Amber Holcomb and Kree Harrison.

Curtis, keep on preachin’ and reaching for the stars!
