Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry will officially return to the “X-Men” franchise as Storm in the upcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

Berry, who will be seen later this month in the thriller “The Call,” has been the subject of speculation over whether she would return as the silver-haired mutant who can control the weather. Berry played the role in “X-Men” (2000), “X2” (2003) and “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006).

But with the director of those first two films, Bryan Singer, back for “Days of Future Past” and reuniting many of his old cast members, it seemed increasingly likely that Berry would reprise her role.

Deadline reported the news, with Singer himself confirming it via Twitter.

“Days of Future Past” is a time travel story that will feature the younger versions of the X-Men, as seen in 2011’s “X-Men: First Class,” as well as the older mutants of the previous trilogy. The story deals with an attempt to stop a catastrophic event in the past that creates a dark future for mutantkind.

Other returning cast members from the earlier films include Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Ellen Page and Anna Paquin, while “First Class” stars Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult will also appear. “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage is on board as the movie’s villain.

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” is out in theaters July 18, 2014.
