No charge to file taxes

(Indianapolis) –  Indiana residents can now file their taxes online free of charge. The new Indiana Freefile system was unveiled yesterday, which will allow taxpayers let people file both their federal and state taxes at no charge. Eligibility for the program requires that users cannot have an adjusted gross income of more than  $57,000.  A Department of Revenue spokesperson says about one-million households could benefit from the service.

Plans for central Indiana mass transit system detailed

(Indianapolis) -The much anticipated mass transit system plan was finally revealed Tuesday by the mayors of Indianapolis, Carmel, Noblesville and Westfield.  The $1.3 billion proposal calls for doubling the number of bus routes and adding a commuter rail line between downtown Indianapolis and Noblesville.  The  mayors, all Republican, say they will need voters in Marion and Hamilton counties to approve a three-tenths of a percent increase in the county income taxes to go along with federal money for the project.

Chicago Mercantile Exchange will stay in Illinois

(Springfield, IL)  –  Tax breaks promised by Illinois lawmakers have convinced the  CME Group to keep the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in Chicago.  Both Indianapolis and Carmel had hoped the CME would move to central Indiana in order to get away from high tax rates in Illinois. A bill was sent to Illinois governor Pat Quinn giving millions of dollars in tax breaks to both the CME and retailer Sears and Company to keep the two businesses in Chicago.
