Manhole blasts on downtown street

(Indianapolis) – Indianapolis Power and Light Company officials will be busy this morning investigating two  downtown manhole blasts.  Around 9:15 p.m. last Saturday night the manholes exploded on Delaware Street, just blocks away from popular gathering spots, City Market and Conseco Fieldhouse. The utility company’s inspection and safety records are currently under review after a series of blasts have happened since January. 

Crash claims motorist

(Boone County) – Investigators believe alcohol played a role in an early Saturday morning crash which killed a man driving the wrong way on I-465. Carlos Cavazos Jr., 31, was driving in the southbound lanes in Boone County when he crashed head-on into a sport utility vehicle. Three people in the SUV and a passenger in Cavazos’ car were hospitalized and are expected to survive.  Cavazos died at the scene.  Authorities say open alcoholic containers were found in Cavazos’ car.

City-County Council appoints leader

(Indianapolis) – Maggie Lewis, 39, will become the first female president of the City-County Council after Democrats took a 16-13 majority in the November 8th elections.  Lewis says she hopes Democrats and Republicans can work more closely together in the upcoming term than they did in the previous term under Mayor Greg Ballard.

Suspect sought in assault

(Carmel) – Police are looking for a white male in his 20s or 30s with dark hair after a 12-year-old girl says he grabbed her.  The girl was walking her dog in the 4200 block of east 126th Street last Friday when he assaulted her.  The victim says she scratched the suspect’s face and ran to a nearby elementary school where she called police.

Woman receives severe burns in house fire

(Anderson) – A woman is listed in critical condition after her home caught fire last Saturday night.  Margaret Mitchell received third-degree burns over 40 percent of her body after she was pulled from her house in the 2300 block of Brown Street.  Investigators are unclear what started the blaze.
