Happy Birthday to FLOTUS44, First Lady Michelle Obama!

Investigators aren’t sure if slick roads made a crash on Indianapolis’s northwest side worse. Metro Police officers say a young man was speeding Monday night, ran a red light, hit a light pole, and ended-up 20 or 30 feet inside a local business. Ironically, the crash occurred in the 2100 block of North Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Street on the Dr. Martin Luther King Junior holiday. No one inside that business was hurt. Officers say the driver is at IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Without a parking garage, neighbors in Speedway say they’re not sure if they want a new hotel. The plan to add a hotel and apartments not far from the Motor Speedway is running into trouble because neighbors are worried about parking. City leaders hope to float a compromise at Speedway’s redevelopment commission meeting later on Tuesday night.

State officials say the 60 people either getting pink slipped or resigning from the Department of Education are just part of a changing of the guard.  Spokesperson Molly Deuberry says the 34 layoffs are across the board. The department had 26 resignations already in effect before Superintendent Jennifer McCormick took office early this month.

Hoosiers are being encouraged to get a flu shot. The Indiana State Department of Health says four Hoosiers have died of the flu since the influenza season started in October.  State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams says it’s especially important for healthcare workers and pregnant women to get the vaccine.  It takes about two-weeks for the vaccine to become effective.

When former Indiana Governor Mike Pence is sworn in as vice president, he’ll use the same Bible Ronald Reagan used at his inaugurations. Not only that, the Bible will also be opened to the same verse.  Friday’s ceremony will be the first time the Reagan family Bible has been outside of the Reagan family or foundation’s possession. The Bible was given to Reagan by his mother.

The list of lawmakers who plan to boycott Friday’s inauguration is growing. The Washington Post reports at least 42 House Democrats have put their names on the list, after President-elect Donald Trump went on the attack against Congressman John Lewis because the Georgia Democrat said he wouldn’t view him as a “legitimate” president.

Most Americans do not believe Russian hacking altered the outcome of the presidential election. Fifty-eight percent of people surveyed in a new CNN/ORC poll say Donald Trump would have won the White House even if hacked emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman had not been leaked.

One Congresswoman is suggesting that Russian interference in the presidential election could end Donald Trump’s presidency. Maxine Waters speculated that Trump could be impeached if it was discovered that Trump’s campaign worked with the Russians to undermine the election. The California Representative stopped short of saying that Trump was not legitimately elected, but stressed the need for an investigation surrounding the circumstances of the election. Waters will join her fellow Democrats in not attending Trump’s inauguration on Friday because he slammed Representative John Lewis for calling Trump’s election illegitimate.

A Republican senator says it’s not true that the GOP has no plan in mind to replace Obamacare.  Louisiana’s Bill Cassidy says, in fact, his party has several. He told Newsmax he know of at least three alternatives to the Affordable Care Act, and he plans to introduce one of them on Tuesday.

Police in Miami say eight people were hurt in a shooting near a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. Three teens and three adults were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Another teen and an eleven-year-old girl were grazed by bullets and treated at the scene. The incident happened near Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park where a celebration commemorating the late civil rights leader was taking place. Police say two people were being questioned in connection with the shooting.

The widow of Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen is due in federal court in Oakland, California on Tuesday, following her arrest Monday. Noor Salman is accused of obstructing the investigation into the Orlando, Florida attack as well as aiding and abetting terrorism. She was arrested yesterday in California.

In Sports…

The Pacers’ latest win is as much about the New Orleans Pelicans’ inability to hit a shot as it is about Jeff Teague’s excellent play. Teague came two rebounds short of a triple-double in Monday evening’s 98-95 win. The Pelicans had two chances to tie the game in the final seconds, but missed both shots. The Pacers are now two games above 500 with the win.

Thunderstorms during the morning will give way to cloudy skies this afternoon. Areas of dense fog. Morning high of 54 degrees with temps

falling to near 45 degrees.
