Gabrielle Union was photographed for U.S. Harper Bazaar and got quite candid about being a Black woman in Hollywood and dealing with White, Western beauty standards.

The Being Mary Jane actress stunned in a series of all white and cream looks, with a sparkly $1,775.00 Galvan, ‘Moonlight’ sequin dress thrown into the mix. The star looked powerful, self-assured, and confident in all of her editorial images.

In the above image, Gabrielle is wearing a $1,315.00 Paule Ka gown, $745.00 Manolo Blahnik ‘Tres’ sandal in beige suede. She’s wearing $485.00 Jennifer Fisher ‘Orb’ drop earrings.

Gabrielle got candid with the magazine, opening up about White beauty standards and her struggle to come to love the way she looks and not loving her Blackness while growing up in the (mostly white) Pleasanton, California.

“I didn’t love my skin color, I didn’t love my lips. I didn’t love my nose, I didn’t love my hair. I didn’t love anything. I didn’t love my body. Because no one was choosing me – my self-esteem was determined by somebody choosing me.”

Gabrielle continues to admit that she used to curl her lips and press them together in attempts to minimize her Blackness.

However, that was young Gabrielle Union, and the older version of the actress is relishing in her Blackness and using her platform to make others more aware of the Black struggle.
