Black Student Detained For Using $2 Bill At Lunch
A Houston eighth grader was detained by police after being accused of using a fake $2 to pay for her lunch. Yet, the money wasn’t fake, KTRK reported.
Danesiah Neal, 14, tried to purchase chicken nuggets with the bill her grandmother gave her but when the counterfeit pen showed it was a forgery, school officials called in the local police.
“I went to the lunch line and they said my $2 bill was fake,” Danesiah told Ted Oberg Investigates. “They gave it to the police. Then they sent me to the police office. A police officer said I could be in big trouble.”
The police went as far to take the $2 to the bank and it was confirmed that it was actually legit. So what happened? Because the bill was from the 1950s, it was too old for the marker to work. According to Neal’s grandmother, Sharon Kay Joseph, the police returned her money and never even apologized for blowing the situation out of proportion, KTRK noted.
“It was very outrageous for them to do it. There was no need for police involvement. They’re charging kids like they’re adults now,” she said.
“Dear White People” to Become Netflix Series Next Year
Sundance Indie-darling Dear Black People will be adapted into a 10-episode steaming series for Netflix. Justin Simien, who wrote and directed the original film, will write the series as well as direct its first episode, the AV Club wrote.
In a press release, Simeon said that he is excited to continue to be able to give a voice to people who are usually silenced in pop culture.
“I’m so grateful to have this platform—not only to give a voice to those too often unheard in our culture, but to also tell great stories from new points of views. From day one, Lionsgate has been remarkably supportive of the vision for the show, and working with Netflix is every bit as harmonious as I’d imagined it would be. Bringing this show to such a vibrant platform is an honor I don’t take lightly,” he said.
The show is expected to debut in 2017.
#AirBnbWhileBlack Highlights Discrimination Faced By Black Travelers
Last week NPR hosted a Twitter chat to call attention to the racial discrimination that too many African-Americans are experiencing when using the housing host website Airbnb. Using the hashtag created by Quirtina Crittenden, #AirbnbWhileBlack, Black Twitter chimed in, expressing their frustration of not being able to book a room.
Here’s what some had to say:
HELLO BEAUTIFUL previously reported that a Harvard study found that folks with “Black sounding” names were 16 percent less likely to get rented a room by a white host compared to those with “white sounding” names.
Why Did KFC A Line Of Edible Launch Nail Polishes?
Have you ever wanted to have nail polish that tasted like fried chicken and hot sauce? If your answer is “Never,” you’re probably not alone, but KFC doesn’t care. They announced on Thursday that they are launching a new line of edible polishes that are “finger licking good,” Ad Week reported.
The line, which is a joint venture between Ogilvy & Mather and McCormick, is only available in Hong Kong right now, but soon these polishes could be mass made.
“The recipe for our edible nail polish is unique and was specifically designed to hold the flavor, but to also dry with a glossy coat similar to normal nail polish,” says Ogilvy creative director John Koay. “This campaign is designed to be intriguing and fun to increase excitement around the KFC brand in Hong Kong.”
