Indianapolis Metro Police this Monday morning are searching for suspects who are on the lamb after a police chase on the northwest side ended in a crash. This happened in the area of 30th and Elmira. Officials said the vehicle involved was stolen. Of the three people in the car, police took one into custody after they fled, according to media reports. A perimeter has been set up to search for the others. K-9 officers are being used. Call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS, if you see anything suspicious in the area.
Classes are resuming on this Columbus Day at Indianapolis Junior Academy. The Seventh Day Adventist school has been closed since last Tuesday when its principal Norris Ncube and two students–Ncube’s five-year-old niece and 12-year-old son–were killed in an auto crash. Officials say therapy dogs will be at the school today for the students.
HOLIDAY CLOSURES: Speaking of Columbus Day, federal, state and county offices will be closed, though Indianapolis city offices will be open. License branches, most banks and the Post office will also be closed with no home mail delivery today. IndyGo buses are on regular schedules and the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library is open, but is on reduced hours.
An 18-year-old University of Indianapolis student is dead. Police say Saturday night, John McGuire slammed into a traffic post on Highway 36 in Avon. McGuire was a 2015 graduate of Ben Davis High School, and was studying athletic training and physical therapy at U-Indy. Police say alcohol wasn’t a factor in the crash.
Three people are seriously hurt after a wreck involving an Indiana State Trooper. It happened in Howard County. Investigators say a car swiped the State Trooper’s car before rolling off the road. Police say alcohol looks to have played a role in this crash.
It’s time for the Ask-A-Lawyer event which offers free legal advice. More than 100 attorneys from the Indianapolis Bar Association will be available on Tuesday for one-on-one consultations at locations across the city. The program runs twice a year, in April and October. More than 10,000 families have been helped since the program started in 2000.
The City-County Council meets tonight taking a look into the budget and how to pay for the outfitting of metro police officers with body cams.

There’s been an update in the Tamir Rice death case out of Cleveland. Reports from two experts in “police use of force” say the shooting of 12-year-old Rice by a Cleveland Police officer was “tragic” but reasonable. The reports, released on Saturday by the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office conclude that Officer Timothy Loehmann’s actions were reasonable because he believed the boy was armed. The family’s attorney has released a statement calling the conclusion a, “sham and charade.” They say reports written by pro-police experts only tell part of the story they hope will play out in court. President Obama says Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email system was a “mistake.” On CBS’s 60 Minutes, the President said Clinton made a mistake and that she has acknowledged it. He also believes the controversy surrounding her email system is, “in part because of politics.” Speaking of Clinton…
CNN is setting the stage for Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate. As expected, front runner Clinton will be center stage. On either side of Clinton will be Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee will be the bookends on stage. Insiders say They’re keeping a podium available for Vice-President Joe Biden in case he’d like to announce and join them. It’s not likely.
Technically today is Columbus Day a holiday that has caused pain and anxiety for some. But leading into it, schools in California will soon no longer be able to use the Washington Football Team” name or mascot. Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill there banning the name which many Native Americans and others find offensive. Brown signed on Sunday. California is the first state in the nation to ban the name Washington Football Team.”
Also, cities and schools across the country are taking a different approach to today’s holiday. Instead of celebrating Christopher Columbus, some are planning to honor those he encountered in the New World with Indigenous People’s Day. The move is an attempt to clarify the explorer’s role in American history while connecting indigenous culture to today’s world. So…happy Indigenous People Day to you.
If you’re traveling on Southwest Airlines today, you’re being asked to arrive at the airport early–two hours early at least and print your boarding passes before you arrive, if you can. Technical issues were the culprit for major delays for about 13-percent of flights on Sunday. Those tech issues persist today. Southwest isn’t sure when the problems will be 100-percent fixed. However the air carrier is apologizing.
In the weekend’s box office: “The Martian” remains the nation’s top movie for the second week in a row. The Matt Damon film earned another $37 million for a total take of nearly $109 million. Coming in second was “Hotel Transylvania 2.” This film has made over $116 million since it was released to theaters three weeks ago. “Pan” opened in third place followed in order by “The Intern” and “Sicario.”
In Sports…
It was a big win on Sunday night for the Indiana Fever. According to their Facebook page, the Fever have now won more playoff games than any franchise in WNBA history with 35 wins. They avoided elimination in the WNBA Finals against the Minnesota Lynx at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, 75-69. Tamika Catchings scored 10 points, four boards, two steals and two blocks for Indiana. Shenise Johnson led the way with 15 points and helped to force a decisive Game Five in these playoffs. The WNBA Finals will conclude on Wednesday in Minneapolis.

She has a sword, so she used it. An Indianapolis woman used a sword to corner an intruder after he broke into her Eastside home. Karen Dolley told WTHR-TV her instincts just took over. Metro police arrived minutes after her call to 9-1-1 and took over from there. They arrested Jacob Wessel, 30, of Greenwood after what was probably his first encounter with a Hoosier samurai.
