Is Cookie pregnant in season two of Empire? We’ll find out one way or another when the second season of Empire debuts on September 23rd at 9 p.m. on Fox. Actor/musician (and brother of actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell) Jussie Smollett plays Jamal Lyon and his musical contributions as well as his groundbreaking role as an openly gay character have made him among the show’s favorites.

His new single  “Ain’t About The Money” featuring  Yazz, that was just released on iTunes on September 4th. New songs from Season 2 will drop weekly.

So what can Empire fans look forward to in Season 2?

“Where we see the Lyon’s family is completely different than how we met them in the pilot,” Smollett says.  “Everything has been flipped on its head and we’re now challenging the idea of ‘What is success?’ Jamal was probably most successful when he was selling cookies and cakes in a cafe because he was happy. Its challenging his normalcy now, which is still not normal for most people, that he’s coming into his own. It’s a lot of drama, y’all. ”

Smollett who has quickly gone from ‘Jurnee’s brother’ to a star in his own right says he had no idea that the show would take off as it has, although he did think that there was potential once he met his castmates.

“I’ve been doing this for so long that you never really know what is going to resonate with people. It’s not that I didn’t expect it to happen, I just didn’t think about it. I did know that the energy around it was really special and how much the cast and the crew really genuinely love each other. It’s rare that every single person gets along. And I knew that the critical acclaim would be there because of Lee Daniels and Danny Strong.”
