Tragedy strikes an Indianapolis family at their apartment’s pool…

Good morning…

Their child, a 12-year-old who was pulled from their apartment complex’s swimming pool has died. Officials say the boy was found in the water yesterday evening at Chateau in the Woods Apartments.  The fire department says a life guard was not on duty and the child was at the pool alone.

A Lafayette carnival is indefinitely shut down after several children were hurt on a ride Tuesday night. Police say the children were riding a motorcycle-themed ride when it came apart and fell off the track. None of the injuries appear to be life threatening. They say the ride was supposed to be inspected today.

The northbound ramp from I-65 to I-70 at the “South Split” is closed for repair. INDOT says the bridges were built in the 1970’s and parts of them are starting to corrode. An estimated 13,000 drivers use the ramp every day. The work is expected to take two months.

Driving too slow in the left passing lane could soon cost you $500 here in Indiana. A law recently signed by Governor Mike Pence takes effect on July 1st. It requires drivers obeying the speed limit in the fast lane to move to the right when another vehicle is overtaking them, even if the other vehicle is speeding. During debate, opponents called the measure “the silliest, most unjustifiable proposal” and said it doesn’t make sense to make law-abiding citizens the criminal.

An Indianapolis woman, once known as the nation’s youngest person on death row has been found dead here in the city. Paula Cooper was discovered Tuesday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound outside a residence on the northwest side. You may recall, Cooper was 16 when she was sentenced to die for her confessed role in the 1986 murder of a 78-year-old bible teacher, Ruth Pelke, in the city of Gary, Indiana. Cooper admitted to stabbing Pelke 33 times with a butcher knife during a low dollar robbery with other girls. Cooper’s sentence was eventually commuted to a 60-year prison term after human rights activists petitioned to change her sentence because of her young age and Indiana’s Supreme Court obliged. Cooper was released from prison in June 2013 due to good behavior. Paula Cooper, dead at age 45.

Indiana’s Senate supports putting a woman on the $20 bill.  “The Indianapolis Star” reports the mostly male chamber approved a resolution calling on the U.S. Treasury to replace Andrew Jackson.  In his place would be a woman relevant to U.S. history.  The group argues, it’s odd Jackson is on the bill, when he opposed paper currency and a national bank.

The death toll from storms and flooding in Texas and Oklahoma continues to rise. At least 19 people are dead after recovery teams found another body, near the Blanco River in the Hill Country between Austin and San Antonio. Over a dozen are missing, including eight members of two families. They were staying in a vacation home that was swept away by what’s described as a wall of water that roared down the Blanco River over the weekend.

The tax man appears to be in need of an IT guy. The IRS says hackers gained access to the information in 100-thousand tax accounts in a series of attacks that began in February. The IRS says an additional 100,000 attempts to gain information were turned back.

In political news…another former senator is set to enter the GOP race for president. Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania Senator popular among social conservatives, is expected to join the crowded field of Republicans today who are vying for the top office in 2016.
