*Robin Thicke will end his banner 2013 on a sour note, as his hit single “Blurred Lines” has earned him the title “Sexist of the Year” from the End Violence Against Women Coalition.
The song has already been accused of being “rapey.” Tricia Romano of The Daily Beast said the title “Blurred Lines” and portions of the lyrics like “I know you want it” encourage the idea “no doesn’t always mean no” and that some women who are raped are asking for it.
The video was also criticized as being misogynist. The song was even banned from use at student events at the University of Edinburgh for violating its policy against “rape culture and lad banter.”
In announcing Thicke as 2013’s top “Sexist,” Sarah Green of the Coalition issued a statement on the website offering her “heartfelt congratulations to a worthy winner for both his concerted sexist efforts, and in the end the platform he created for rejection of the use of women as objects to promote mediocre pop.”
His reward isn’t a gold statue, but rather a voucher for the download of Aretha Franklin’s “R.E.S.P.E.C.T” to congratulate him and attempt to invite him to change his sexist ways.
