There’s a line that many people won’t cross when it comes to supporting their spouses, Mellie proved last night that line does not exist for her.
Many of us have spent the last three seasons wishing, profusely, that Mellie would just fall by the wayside so Olitz could live happily ever after. However watching her back story on last night’s episode had us all wanting to ask for her forgiveness for our sins. Mrs. Grant showed her presidential balls while she participated in a behind the scenes expose so she could get in America’s good graces once more and we realized she is much more than the villain we made her out to be.

“Scandal” is land of the flashback and this episode took us fifteen years prior, before Fitz was President Grant and Big Jerry was still alive. We saw up close and personal how Daddy Grant pulled on Fitz in the early days, ridiculing him for being weak and nothing more than a Senator’s son. But it is Mellie who stands in his corner. Even enduring a heinous crime that left us to wonder if she and Fitz’ oldest son is truly just his son…or his brother.
We’re also introduced to a bearded pre-balding Cyrus who also accuses the President in the making of being feeble-minded and whiny and says Mellie must turn him into her full-time job. Thus shedding some light on why she feels the need to rescue and take care of all things Fitz. At the time this law firm partner chose to give up her dream and turn her husband into her charity case.
But the sacrifices Mellie chooses to make go next level when Fitz’s dad Big Jerry violates her one night, in one of the most disturbing scenes of the show. Mellie, in shock from her rape, comes to breakfast the next morning and agrees to keep the horrific act from Fitz and pretend like nothing ever happened….in exchange for Big Jerry apologizing for being a crappy father and encouraging him in his career moving forward. We later find out that ‘Lil Jerry was conceived around this time, leaving questions about who his real father is…

Meanwhile present day Olivia has tasked the associates of OPA in figuring out the mystery of her mother’s death. Knowing she’s exposing her staff to the insanity of her father she warns them all that they are not required to accept the mission; but come on these are Gladiators, was no really an option? As the team digs deeper into the grave of buried information we learn more and more about the details of the flight Fitz shot down. Like Omar Dresden and the passenger escorted off the plane before departure. The whole saga continues down a messy road.

And if it’s messy lately that means Quinn is somewhere nearby. Baby Huck is now not only target practicing with the enemy but she’s sleeping with him. Last week former nice girl Lindsay Dwyer now badass Quinn decided she was going to take matters into her own hands by agreeing to take Huck’s arch nemesis’ shooting advice. Lo and behold there are ulterior motives. While we all think he’s just there to spy on her and take his intel to Command, the truth is he’s a part of the B613 recruiting crew and Quinn is the number one draft pick. As she decides to hide in the bushes spying on his PI job she is made, subsequently kissed and asked out on a date by the killer. On their date he lures her by giving her the opportunity to drug someone, to which she replies, yes. As per usual she took eight steps in the wrong direction, ends up doing far more than drugging the security guard — she kills him. Little does she know that this test is her initiation into the baddest spy gig in the land and our Baby Spy has made it to the big leagues.

If the shock of Big Jerry raping Mellie and possibly being her baby daddy or Quinn becoming a spy wasn’t enough we learned in this episode the most important shocker of all — Mama Pope lives on! The show ends with Daddy Pope taking a visit to see this elusive Omar Dresden who turns out to be none other than Mama Pope in maximum security rising out of the bed like a tale from the crypt. Go ahead pick your mouth up, you read right. Mama Pope Lives. And she wears a side ponytail.
She also wants to see her daughter, Olivia, and wants Papa Pope to make it happen. Will they be reunited?
