Armed gunmen entered a mall in Nairobi, Kenya, sparking an intense standoff with police after opening fire on shoppers and diners.

The Westgate Mall in Nairobi was the scene for an attack that left 39 confirmed dead this morning, including family members of the president of the country. Two gunmen are amongst the dead. A tweet from the secretary to the Cabinet stated that another 293 people were treated at area hospitals and there was a need for people to donate blood.

Al-Shabaab, a militant group wth inks to al-Qaeda based in Somalia has claimed responsibility for the attack and has promised not to negotiate with Kenyan authorities. The group claimed all “all Muslims” were released from the mall prior to the attack.

The Kenyan National Police said, via their Twitter site, “Attackers of Westgate shopping mall have been isolated and pinned down in a room by security forces in the ongoing operation,”
