India Arie says Billboard charts, positions, sales figures and all the things most focus on are not definitive of success for her anymore.

Appearing on “Super Soul Sunday” with Oprah Winfrey, Arie redefined success to not include money or chart positions, but clarity and joy.

“I know what success is in the music industry. I know about the Billboard charts and selling, the money and all that. That was never my definition of success. So, I decided to write down my definition of success which is clarity of my intention and reaching that intention while being true to myself and with joy,” Arie shared with Oprah.

Adding to that, she went on to admit that she’s had millions of dollars and has been unhappy at the same time.

“What’s the point of having it all if you don’t feel good. I know what it’s like to have millions of dollars and have an ulcer and can’t get out of bed and can’t drink water. It’s like, ‘what good is that?'”

That said, India Arie has learned that it’s okay to say no.

“I can just say no. Stop. Don’t call me anymore. I could say ‘no’. Of course I knew it intellectually but it didn’t live in me,” she said of her past, choosing to do things she really had no interest in doing.
