2 City Officials, 3 Others Indicted in Bribery Scheme

Two city employees are facing fraud and bribery charges.  Reggie Walton and John Hawkins worked for the Department of Metropolitan Development, but have been suspended without pay.  Officials say the two men sold city-owned properties…. to non-for-profit groups at discounted prices.  Then those groups would allegedly re-sale the properties to for-profit groups at market value.  The Problem…Walton and Hawkins are accused of getting kickback payment from those re-sales.

 

Children Killed By Smoke Inhalation and Bad Burns in Cumberland Fire

Officials say the two kids that were killed in a fire in Cumberland died from smoke inhalation and “very bad” burns.  Their mother is still in critical condition with burned lungs and leg injuries she got when she jumped from a window.  Investigators don’t yet know what started the blaze.

 

Indianapolis To Decide on Superbowl Bid

Indianapolis officials say they will decide next month if they are bidding for the 2018 Super Bowl.  New Orleans and Denver are also expected to make a bid, while Atlanta and Minnesota have expressed interest.  On Tuesday, the NFL awarded the 2016 Super Bowl to San Francisco and the 2017 game to Houston.

 

Indiana BMV Sued over Extra Service Charges

In response to a class-action lawsuit that alleged the Indiana BMV overcharged as many as 4 million Hoosiers since 2007, the BMV has admitted “it may have inadvertently overcharged” drivers. An Indianapolis attorney claims all Indiana drivers under the age of 75 who obtained or renewed a license since 2007 were overcharged as much as $7 per license.

The suit seeks more than $30 million in damages. It claims Indiana has more than 4 million licensed drivers.

 

2 Tornadoes Touched Down in Indiana

The National Weather Service has confirmed that two EF-0 tornados touched down in Hendricks and Putnam counties early Tuesday. One of the twisters hit just after 2:30 a.m. in North Salem, that’s about eight miles northwest of Danville.

The other touched down in Roachdale in Putnam County, where Winds of up to 85 mph caused tree and roof damage in both areas.

 

Gas Prices Predicted to Stay Under $4

Gas Pump News may be good this summer.

A Purdue professor said it isn’t likely gas prices will reach $4 per gallon anytime soon…but will run between $3.50 and $3.90 a gallon, unless a major disruption occurs.

Prices are currently at the top of his price range because of disruptions at refineries in Whiting, Ind., and Joliet, Ill, but he predicted price drops as soon as those are fixed.
