Lauryn Hill is facing tax fraud charges, subject to aloof tumblr rants, but still manages to come out punching on her new song, “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix).”
The psychedelic, in-your-face track hit iTunes without warning on Saturday via her label Obverse Creation Music/Sony ATV. It is her first new solo track since 2010’s R&B-tinged “Repercussions.” On “Neurotic Society,” Hill returns to her hip-hop roots, spitfiring about our toxic civilization.
“Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline,” Hill wrote on her tumblr in regards to the new song. “I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!”
While Hill has remained mostly quiet on the new music front since dropping her epic, five-time Grammy-winningThe Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998, she still manges to make this song, “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix),” sound like it came from the not too distant future. Hit play below.
