Seventeen people died during the evening rush on Monday in eastern Baghdad when Islamic State militants attacked a shopping mall. The group has returned to guerrilla warfare in an effort to reassert its dominance after losing control of the capital to Iraqi forces, reports The New York Times.

In the most intense fighting that northern Iraq has seen this year, at least 180 Islamic State fighters were killed in a U.S.-led assault that began about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Despite pledging to bring home almost all American troops before leaving office, President Barack Obama plans to leave nearly 10,000 troops in war-torn Afghanistan through 2016 in an effort to help fend off the Taliban, reports the Washington Post.
