Founded on February 12, 1909, the NAACP has been at the center of some of the most important civil rights victories in American history. For more than a century, the organization has fought to protect Black rights through legal action, advocacy, protest, and policy reform.
Here are five historic NAACP moments that helped shape the nation.
1. The Launch of The Crisis Magazine in 1910
In 1910, the NAACP launched The Crisis, a groundbreaking publication edited by W. E. B. Du Bois.
The magazine became one of the most influential Black publications in the country, highlighting racial injustice, promoting Black art and literature, and amplifying civil rights issues nationwide.
It gave a voice to a generation during the Jim Crow era and helped fuel the Harlem Renaissance.
2. The Fight Against Lynching
During the early 1900s, lynching terrorized Black communities across the South. The NAACP led a decades long anti lynching campaign, documenting cases, organizing protests, and pushing for federal legislation.
Although early anti lynching bills were blocked in Congress, the NAACP’s advocacy laid the groundwork for future federal civil rights protections and forced the nation to confront racial violence.
3. Brown v. Board of Education Victory in 1954
One of the most pivotal legal victories in U.S. history came when the NAACP Legal Defense Fund successfully argued Brown v. Board of Education before the Supreme Court.
Led by attorney Thurgood Marshall, the case overturned segregation in public schools, declaring that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. The ruling became a cornerstone of the modern Civil Rights Movement.
4. The 1963 March on Washington The NAACP played a key role in organizing the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic I Have a Dream speech.
The march brought together more than 250,000 people and helped build momentum for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
