A Spring, Texas family who invited an African-American friend to stay with them was surprised to find their truck defaced with racial slurs, PEOPLE reports.

Darren and Hayli Franke, who are White, had a Black friend stay with them for two days. While Darren and his friend were doing chores around the yard, they found the couple’s $50,000 truck covered in racial slurs like “nigger,” and large “KKK” letters spray-painted on the vehicle’s roof.

The couple says the incident left them (and their guest) shocked and embarrassed.

“He felt like it was his fault,” Hayli said. “And I don’t want him to feel that way. He’s always welcome in our home.”

The Frankes were also teased and met with stern stares when they tried to take the truck to the car wash.

“People stared and pointed,” the wife told KTRK. “They thought we did it. I think it is hateful and disgusting. Anyone who knows us knows we would never do anything like that.”

Friends and neighbors came to the Franke home to help clean off the slurs with soap and nail polish remover. Harris County Precinct 4 will investigate the defacing. The couple also plans to install surveillance cameras around their home.
