One person has been found shot to death Tuesday morning shortly before 6:30 a.m. WTHR is reporting this happened in the 1300 block of North Ewing Street on the city’s east side. Metro Police believe the man to be in his 50’s, but haven’t released his identity. They’re investigating the circumstances of his death.
The Richmond Hill explosion trial continues today in South Bend. Jurors are expected to hear from workers at a Lawrenceburg casino–that’s where suspect Mark Leonard and his former girlfriend Monserrate Shirley were, at the time of the explosion. Shirley has admitted to the conspiracy to blow up her home for the insurance money payout, and agreed to testify at the trials of Leonard, his brother Bob, as well as other defendants in exchange for the State of Indiana dropping its pursuit of a sentence of life without parole. Leonard is currently on trial accused of being the mastermind behind the plot. That blast killed the couple who lived next door to Shirley and destroyed or damaged 80 homes in the Indy south side neighborhood.
A Lafayette couple is accused of beating their 16 year old son with a baseball bat. Chad and Cynthia Wilkins face felony charges including battery with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors say Cynthia Wilkins posted photos on Facebook a few weeks ago of images depicting injuries with belittling messages.
Indianapolis metro police are also investigating the robbery of a couple at gunpoint in their home. They say the couple left the garage door open Sunday night where the thief entered early Monday morning. The burglar took them room-to-room at gunpoint and took everything from jewelry, electronics, cell phones, and the woman’s wedding ring as their ten-year-old child slept. They say the masked gunman oddly enough wouldn’t take anything they said belonged to their son, and then apologized for robbing them before leaving with the items.
A program in here in Indy tasked with turning lives around is getting $1.3 million. It’s called RecycleForce, and it gives transitional jobs to ex-convicts to help transition them to society after jail time. The jobs recycle electronic waste and other trash. The area on the east side is the first Promise Zone given the grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.
The First Church of Cannabis is preparing for its first service, but it’ll be marijuana-free. Church creator Bill Levin says police threatened to arrest to anyone caught smoking, possessing or in the presence of pot during Wednesday’s service. Levin started the church after Governor Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) earlier this year. Levin believes the law, which kicks in July 1, protects his right to use marijuana.
A Martinsville youth pastor is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a girl in his youth group. Jeremy Mitchell faces four felony charges in the case. Eastview Christian Church says the 26-year-old has admitted to the relationship and has stepped down as youth pastor.
President Obama is proposing a new rule that would give millions of Americans a raise. In an op-ed piece for the Huffington Post, Obama detailed a plan that would make around five million more people eligible for overtime pay. It would raise the salary threshold for when workers are qualified for time-and-a-half pay from about $23,000 to over $50,000 a year.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is expected to throw his hat into the ring today, as Republican presidential candidate number 14. The 52-year old Christie will make his announcement in Livingston, New Jersey at his old high school before heading to New Hampshire for a town hall-style meeting. Christie’s campaign motto will be “Telling It Like It Is.”
The Ku Klux Klan is planning a rally supporting the Confederate flag on the South Carolina capitol grounds. A Klan chapter from neighboring state North Carolina has been granted a permit to hold a rally there on July 18, just over a month after “The Charleston Nine” were murdered during a prayer meeting-bible study at a historic African-American church, Emanuel A.M.E., in Charleston. The young white supremacist charged with the murders, Dylann Storm Roof, posted an online photo of himself holding a Confederate battle flag.
Back here in Indiana…Oh mummy! Development of a quarry in the Northwest part of the state is on hold after the discovery of a mummified body. Workers exploring the site in Singleton recently discovered the wrapped remains experts say could be anywhere from 500 to 2,000 years old. State archaeologists are now scouring the area for artifacts. They’re looking for evidence which could determine if it’s a burial ground. Cue Steve Martin singing “King Tut.”
Sports: The Pacers have revealed their Summer League roster. On Monday, the team said Solomon Hill, Myles Turner and Joe Young will all play for the squad in Orlando. Indiana opens Summer League play against the Heat on Saturday.
The Indiana Fever are in action today. Indy’s WNBA team will square off with the Sun tonight on the road in Connecticut. Indiana suffered an 83-77 home loss to the Sky its last time out on Friday. The Fever fell to 3-and-6 on the season with the setback. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.
