The national president of the NAACP wants South Carolina lawmakers to take down the Confederate flag flying outside the State Capitol building. On Sunday morning television program, CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Cornell William Brooks said the flag is more recognizable as a symbol of white supremacists than for any historical reasons. The shooter who killed nine people at historic black church “Mother” Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal in Charleston, including the pastor, had that flag on his car’s license plate. There are also numerous photos of him posing along with it on social media and his own website. Services resumed at Emanuel A.M.E., the site of this deadly hate crime massacre, Sunday morning with about 400 in attendance along with heavy police presence. Watch Brooks talk about this, other issues and tempering forgiveness with accountability below:

Thousands of people of all races linked hands to honor the nine people, now known as “The Emanuel Nine” killed at Emanuel A.M.E. Huge crowds gathered on both sides of the two and-a-half mile Ravenel Bridge also on Sunday. People walked across the bridge in pairs, then held hands in a human chain that stretched over the Cooper River from Charleston to Mount Pleasant.
