Apparently, an apology to the judge is all it took to get Chad Johnson released from the pokey

In fact, after apologizing to Judge Kathleen McHugh – for what she perceived as lack of respect when he slapped his attorney on the backside in court last week – Johnson was immediately released this morning according to reports.

Then again, some say the judge straight up over reacted with the harsh sentence in the first place.

In any event, McHugh, a Broward County, Florida Circuit accepted Johnson’s apology Monday and reduced his jail term from 30 days to seven days. Attorney Adam Swickle said the butt-slap was just a football player’s way of saying thanks.

Johnson, 35, was in court because of a probation violation stemming from a domestic altercation he had with his then-wife, TV reality star Evelyn Lozada.

Johnson had reached a deal with prosecutors for community service and counseling to resolve his probation violation from his no-contest plea last year to battery on Lozada, but it was rejected by McHugh last week after Johnson gave Swickle a backside pat.

“This isn’t a joke,” the judge said, raising questions about his sincerity.

As we reported, Terrell Owens visited Johnson in jail on Saturday and tweeted that his former teammate was in “good spirits.”

“I really didn’t know what to expect but to see the homie locked up is a very humbling experience, to talk to him via vid conference let me know that’s not where anyone wants to be,” Owens wrote. “I know he’s only in the county jail but to someone that has never been locked up…Jail is Jail!”
