CLAY COUNTY, Ind — Police shot a man Tuesday evening after he rammed a U-Haul into law enforcement vehicles during a standoff, according to Indiana State Police.

Troopers say officers tried to stop a stolen U-Haul around 5:50 p.m. near State Roads 59 and 42. The driver, 47-year-old Dale L. Evans of Terre Haute, ignored police and led them on a short pursuit down a private driveway.

A woman riding in the truck jumped out and ran. Officers attempted negotiations with Evans, who reversed the U-Haul, nearly hit a deputy, and rammed multiple patrol cars. After a second round of negotiations, police say Evans drove forward and struck an ISP vehicle, sending a trooper airborne.

Officers from Terre Haute and Clay County opened fire, hitting Evans. Medics treated him at the scene before flying him to an Indianapolis hospital. His condition is unknown.

The woman was questioned and released. The injured trooper was treated at a Terre Haute hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

All officers involved are on administrative leave during the investigation.
