It’s a busy day here in Indy confirming a shift of power in this state from one man to the next and diversity was apparent at the star-studded Golden Globe Awards Sunday night. Good day to you.
Eric Holcomb is now the governor of the state of Indiana. His gubernatorial inauguration got underway Monday morning at 11 a.m. at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. It was a well-attended event with high security due to the presence of Vice President-elect and vacating Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Pence attended along with his wife before heading to Washington D.C. to serve as President-elect Donald Trump’s number two. Others sworn-in taking their oath of office today included, Lt. Gov.-elect Suzanne Crouch, Attorney General-elect Curtis Hill, State Auditor-elect Tera Klutz and State Schools Superintendent-elect Dr. Jennifer McCormick. So the new leadership team is now in place.
As he prepares to move to D.C. to work in the White House, Governor Mike Pence is bidding farewell to the state he’s served since 2013. In a video that can be found on YouTube, the Vice President-elect said he’s proud of the people in Indiana because they’re known around the world as being “good and kind-hearted.” He thanked Hoosiers for the opportunity to serve them, and said he knows the best days for Indiana and America are yet to come.
State Representative Karlee Macer plans to introduce a bill that would raise the age of consent here in Indiana from 16 to 18. She told The Indianapolis Star the bill would create a criminal offense called indiscretion. It could be filed against someone at least 23-years-old who engages in sexual conduct with a person who is at least 16 but younger than 18. Macer says the bill would give prosecutors and judges another tool to hold people accountable for preying on children.
Police in Carmel are investigating a crash that killed a woman. Officials say the accident happened early Sunday morning on 96th Street between Gray Road and Randall Drive. It’s believed the woman pulled out in front a man driving a truck. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
Inhale. Do you smell that?…Some Hamilton and Marion County residents do. It’s a gas odor and public safety workers are trying to track down the source of it in parts of both counties. Officials believe it’s being caused by a gas additive called mercaptan. Officials say mercaptan isn’t deadly to humans or animals. If you do have nausea, eye or skin irritation, you should move immediately to a well-ventilated area and call 911.
It could be another day or two before an Indianapolis family gets their ID’s, credit cards, and clothes from the airport in Ft. Lauderdale. Lisa Berry and her family are stuck in Florida, after they had to flee the Ft. Lauderdale airport following last week’s shooting. Berry told WTHR TV on Sunday they still don’t have the things they had to drop in the airport. It could be Wednesday before they get their IDs and wallets back.

The man accused of opening fire at that Florida airport Friday, killing five people and wounding six others, appeared in court today. Esteban Santiago faces several federal charges that carry the death penalty. Monday’s court hearing focused on ensuring Santiago has an attorney, and on whether he should continue to be held without bail. To that end, the court appointed him a public defender. The judge in the case has also ordered Santiago held without bond. Santiago was shackled and remained motionless throughout the hearing, which lasted less than 20 minutes.
The hunt for a suspected cop killer is underway in Florida. Orlando Police Sergeant Debra Clayton was shot to death at a Walmart after confronting a man reportedly dressed as a security guard. The suspect is identified as Markeith Loyd and he is considered armed and dangerous. In a related incident, an Orange County Sheriff’s motorcycle deputy also died after a vehicle turned in front of him while he was searching for the suspect, Loyd.
Senate confirmation hearings begin this week for President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees. The highest-profile nominees include Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, Trump’s pick for Attorney General. Recently retired Exxon-Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson is preparing for what promises to be a contentious hearing on his nomination as Secretary of State.
A South Carolina jury could begin deciding Dylann Roof’s later this week. Testimony in the penalty phase of the Charleston church shooter’s murder trial is expected to wrap up today. Roof killed nine black worshipers, including the pastor, at South Carolina’s historic ‘Mother’ Emanuel AME Church in June of 2015.
Pope Francis is challenging all religious leaders to reject the idea that killing in the name of God can ever be justified. In today’s address to diplomats accredited to the Holy See, the Pope appealed to what he called all religious authorities to join in reaffirming that “one can never kill in God’s name.” Francis referred to terrorist attacks in nearly a dozen countries last year and said, “We are dealing with a homicidal madness which misuses God’s name in order to disseminate death, in a play for domination and power.”

“La La Land” is a history-maker at the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards. The musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone picked up a record seven wins Sunday night, including acting awards for both Gosling and Stone. The film also won Best Musical or Comedy. CONGRATS to Viola Davis! She picked up a win for Supporting Actress at Sunday night’s Globes for her role in the Denzel Washington-helmed “Fences”…an August Wilson work. Other big winners were Donald Glover who captured Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy for the first season of his FX network TV project, “Atlanta,” Tracee Ellis-Ross who won “Best Actress in a TV Series Comedy or Musical” for her work on ABC’s “Black-ish,” the film “Moonlight” for Best Picture-Drama and actress Meryl Streep who received a lifetime achievement award (the Cecil B. DeMille Award) and took aim at president-elect Donald Trump without calling his name. She also took journalists to task and asked for support for them so they could do their jobs responsibly moving forward.

Donald Trump responded to Streep’s criticism on Monday morning in a Tweet. He called her “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood.” Streep blasted Trump for his apparent mocking of a disabled reporter (Serge F. Kovaleski) during that speech—video that has been seen all over the world. Trump continued on Twitter, saying he never mocked a reporter and calling Streep a “Hillary flunky.” Click the link above to see Trump mocking Kovaleski and what was at the heart of why Trump targeted him. Butler University is looking at a fine of $5,000 for beating the defending national champions. Well, really, the Big East is fining the school for when fans rushed the court after last week’s win over top-ranked Villanova. On Sunday, the Big East said it will however, donate the fine to Butler’s “Be The Match” charity.
The Colts may be losing one of their top football executives. Vice president of football operations Jimmy Raye the Third says he spoke with the San Francisco 49ers about their open general manager spot Sunday. Raye’s father worked for the team in San Francisco for a number of years. The 49ers fired their coach and GM after an abysmal 2-19 season.
Indianapolis Weather…
Indianapolis is in-line for a 25-degree temperature swing over the next three days. Forecasters say the city will see a high of about 33 degrees today. But they expect Indy to see temps in the upper 50s by Thursday. The National Weather Service says to expect plenty of rain between now and then. Again, Monday’s High: 33 degrees. Low: 30 degrees.
