Today is the day that Old Man Winter is showing out. Good day to you on this snowy Thursday. You can’t spank Old Man Winter, but city snow plow crews can throw salt at him. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect here in Indy. It started at 5 a.m. and stretches to 9 p.m. Thursday night—mainly due to more snow coming in late this afternoon during the rush hour. (Just in time for the kids to get out of school and for you to make your way home from work.) The National Weather Service says one-to-three-inches of snow is expected. Some of it greeted morning commuters. While it’s not a lot of accumulation, the impact is expected to be greater because morning and evening commutes will likely be impacted. Indianapolis Metro Police (IMPD) commanders are asking that you give yourself some extra time to get to your destination—work, school or wherever.
Thursday morning’s slick weather may have played a role in a deadly early morning accident on Indy’s west side. One man died and another was injured in a one-car crash that happened around 4 a.m. near Kessler Boulevard and Lafayette Road. The passenger in that car was killed when the vehicle hit a tree and the driver was hospitalized. Police haven’t verified the weather’s role or whether any substances were at issue.

A public safety crisis here in Indianapolis, as noted by leaders of various non-profit organizations, is bringing those leaders together Thursday morning to address the city’s crime and rising homicides. They plan to offer a ‘call to action’ and offer recommendation to the City of Indianapolis to address the ongoing violence. The Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition is holding a press conference at the Martin Luther King Junior Center at 11:45 a.m. Joining them will be representatives of Peace in the Streets, Indiana Black Expo Incorporated, the Baptist Minister’s Foresight Alliance and others. Crime by the numbers—according to info released by the Ten Point Coalition based on Indy’s Public Safety Department’s official tallies, in 2016, Indianapolis broke a previous record set in 2015 with a total number of homicides reaching 171. Year 2015’s total was 144 and they’re calling this growth trend, “totally unacceptable” and a “public health crisis.” The MLK Center is centrally located at 40 West 40th Street.
A five-year-old girl shot in the head on New Year’s Eve is now dead. IMPD announced on Wednesday that D’asia Turentine passed away at Riley Hospital for Children. Investigators believe she was accidentally shot by her three-year-old brother after getting the gun out of their mother’s purse. It’s not yet been decided if charges will be filed as a result of this shooting.
Governor-elect Eric Holcomb is set to lay out his legislative agenda. It’ll be unveiled this afternoon at the Statehouse. So far, Holcomb has been fairly vague on what he wants to accomplish as the state’s chief executive. He previously said he wanted to make sure his proposals are sound before unveiling them.

Determined and vague at the same time…That describes Vice President-elect and still-Indiana Governor-until-next-Monday’s-Gubernatorial-Inauguration, Mike Pence. He was on Capitol Hill Wednesday laying out a mandate with Congressional Republicans who plan to move quickly to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Doing so is ‘job one’ once President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Vague comes in because they’ve revealed no firm plan to replace it.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama is urging congressional Democrats not to “rescue” their GOP colleagues by helping them pass a replacement for the Affordable Care Act. In a closed-door meeting also on the Hill on Wednesday, he told Democrats to start referring to the Republicans’ new plan as “Trumpcare.”
Intelligence officials head to Capitol Hill today to brief lawmakers on Russia’s alleged hacking during the presidential campaign. On Friday, President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to receive an intelligence briefing on the matter. He has, and continues to, express skepticism that Russia was involved in hacks believed to have targeted the Democratic Party.
Attacks on Planned Parenthood continue… A house panel formed to investigate the procurement of human fetal tissue for medical research is recommending the end of federal funding for Planned Parenthood. The Select Investigative Panel made the recommendation in a 471-page final report on Wednesday.

Congratulations to Butler! The Bulldogs knocked off Number One seeded Villanova Wednesday night to make ‘Bulldog Nation’ go wild or ‘Ruff 66!’ That was the score 66 to 58. (Those ‘Dawgs’ got the ‘Cats’ at home.) For the second time in Butler team history, they beat the defending national champions. Butler coach Chris Holtmann says his team played lights out, and showed what an “unbelievable program and an unbelievable team” they have.

On Chicago-style hotdogs, pickles and tomatoes come on the dog. It’s important to know this now, before the Portillo’s opens in Fishers sometime this year. The Chicago-style hotdog and Italian beef restaurant is advertising for managers for a store in Fishers near the new IKEA location. City leaders say they started talking with Portillo’s officials in the fall, but they don’t have an opening date just yet.
