WISH-TV 8’s political guru, Jim Shella is retiring from the station after a 34-year television career there covering Indiana politics, according to an announcement by the station.

“I arrived at WISH-TV looking for a job and found a career,” said Shella. “I have been given the privilege to cover Indiana politics with the freedom to pursue stories that other stations ignore. I send my thanks to the viewers who made it possible.”

Shella is the politics reporter that has been in the trenches covering that beat longer than any other television reporter in this state, according to 24-Hour News 8. Shella, a friend to our Radio One airwaves (often commiserating with our late-talk show host Amos Brown—who loved and faithfully covered politics) recently broke the story that Governor Mike Pence was traveling to New York, where he was later named Donald Trump’s GOP running mate. The station says, among other major stories Shella broke include Senator Richard “Dick” Lugar’s decision to run for President in 1996, and former-Governor Mitch Daniels being chosen to become President of Purdue University.

In his illustrious career, Shella covered six Indiana Governors and reported from 14 national conventions. He interviewed President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan and Dan Quayle, to name a few political figures on the national scene that impact Hoosier life. In addition to his reporting duties, for 15 years, he did his “Weekly Chat with the Governor” and hosted and produced, the Emmy-nominated, “Indiana Week in Review,” in conjunction with WFYI, for the last 25 years.

Viewers will greatly miss his warm personality and his skillfull journalism. Shella’s last day with WISH-TV 8 will be after the general election on November 11.
