“You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs. Fifty-eight percent of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?” – Donald Trump

So now Donald Trump has discovered Black folks – a critical voting bloc that he has essentially ignored for the past 14 months.

With 80 days to go before the presidential election, Trump, the brash billionaire Republican, believes he can persuade African-Americans to vote for him simply by delivering a few speeches.

It’s a tall order.

“If African-Americans give Donald Trump a chance by giving me their vote, the result for them will be amazing,” Trump said last week during a rally in Charlotte, N.C.

“Look at how badly things are going under decades of Democratic leadership — look at the schools, look at the 58 percent of young African-Americans not working,” Trump added. “It is time for change.”

Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party have taken African-American votes totally for granted,” he said. “Because the votes have been automatically there, there has been no reason for Democrats to produce.”

This is the desperate Donald Trump. He doesn’t know how to address Black voters personally, so he talks about helping Black folks at a rally that was predominantly attended by whites.

Trump accused Clinton of “bigotry” toward Black voters, adding that she “panders to and talks down to communities of color.”

“No group in America has been more harmed by Hillary Clinton’s policies than African-Americans. No group. No group,” he said. “If Hillary Clinton’s goal was to inflict pain on the African-American community, she could not have done a better job. It’s a disgrace. Tonight, I’m asking for the vote of every single African-American citizen in this country who wants to see a better future.”

But that dog won’t hunt. Several polls found Trump receiving approximately 2 percent support from black voters, but Trump still says he can win a large portion of the Black electorate.

He’s delusional.

Sure, there are some Black Republicans who have joined Trump’s bandwagon but a clear majority of Black voters will vote for Clinton, who has spent years building a coalition of people of color.

Clinton leads Trump in some of the most diverse battleground states – including by double digits in two of them – according to four brand-new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls. In the key battleground state of Florida, Clinton is ahead of Trump by five points among registered voters, 44 percent to 39 percent.

I’m not sure there are enough angry whites to counter the African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and women who will turn out for Clinton in large numbers.

“And at the end of four years, I guarantee you that I will get over 95 percent of the African-American vote,” Trump said. “I promise you. Because I will produce.”

Produce what?

Trump is long on rhetoric and short on substance. And it seems every week he creates a new slogan or a new gimmick.

This week, Trump is courting Black folks. Next week, he’ll move on to another ploy.
