In less than a week, another police officer has been shot and killed just outside a major metropolitan district.
In Fox Lake, Ill., some 60 miles north of Chicago, Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was gunned down after giving chase to three suspects in the area on Tuesday. A large manhunt for the suspects was on its second day, and just moments ago, it was announced that the search has ended in Fox Lake.
As reported by the Washington Post, Lt. Gliniewicz was chasing two White men and one Black man in Fox Lake on Tuesday morning, according to police reports.
After Gliniewicz’s superiors lost contact with him, he was found later suffering from the fatal wound.
From the Washington Post:
Police said that Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, an officer in Fox Lake, Ill., was shot and killed Tuesday morning after he reported that he was on foot and chasing three possible suspects.
Gliniewicz was a father of four and a decorated officer known to many as “G.I. Joe,” Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit said at a news conference Tuesday.
“We lost a family member,” Schmit said.
Local agencies and federal authorities combed the Fox Lake area after the shooting, sending waves of officers and 48 police dogs out on the ground while helicopters skimmed overhead.
It was announced that Lt. Gliniewicz was investigating the suspects for suspicious activity before the chase began.
As reported by CBS Chicago, the manhunt in Fox Lake ended as it appears the suspects have fled the area. Authorities believe the suspects are out of town, or possibly out of state.
The Fox Lake shooting comes just as Texas is still reeling after the shooting death of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth just outside of Houston last Friday.
Sen. Ted Cruz blamed President Barack Obama for creating an environment dangerous to police, and Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman took aim at the Black Lives Matter movement, claiming the group’s fight against police brutality has morphed into aggression against officers.
