*“12 Years a Slave” actress Lupita Nyong’o had to cover her body with plastic welts to portray  Patsey, a slave who is viciously beaten and raped during the Golden Globe winning film.

The actress tells Britain’s Telegraph magazine that she actually slept in the prosthetics stuck to her skin in an attempt to understand her character’s life.

“I could only sleep on my stomach and I was so uncomfortable and haunted by these wounds,” she said. “I realized my night of discomfort was temporary. Hers (Patsey’s) was permanent. It broke my heart realizing how she had zero choice. All she ever wanted was to be released through death and she didn’t even get that.”
