Jennifer Hudson launched her Jennifer Hudson Collection for QVC line yesterday with a stylish presentation at the New Museum in New York. Her line of apparel and accessories consists of 14 designs that include leggings, sports jackets, maxi skirts and body-hugging short dresses. The looks, which range from approximately $50 to $170, will be available for purchase on QVC in early September (set to coincide with Fashion’s Night Out), followed by a one-hour premiere on the TV channel on September 10th.

Hudson, wearing one of her original designs – a form-fitting, deep blue knit dress with lace inset – sat down for an intimate press Q&A at the launch, during which she shared her excitement and reservations about putting her stamp on the style world.

“Coming into fashion is a whole new world for me,” Hudson explained. “Although I’ve always had a love for fashion, it’s a tough industry.” She noted that the collection was inspired by designers Michael Kors, Givenchy and Rick Owens, adding, “I want to focus on being cute and comfortable at the same time and [Owens] makes fabulous things but with a certain amount of comfort to it, and I love that. As far as Michael Kors, I think he caters to the real woman, every woman – curves, no curves, he got you.”

Hudson’s contemporary looks for QVC carried a unique flair, like accessible styles seen at H&M, and seemed able to transition easily from work to evening. They featured interesting prints, delicate details (like lace, zippers and big gold buttons) and figure-flattering silhouettes. The inexpensive styles may serve as helpful basics to several body types; as Hudson recently told WWD, “I wanted the clothes to be where any girl could wear it — no matter what size you are — and you could feel comfortable in it.”

The former American Idol contestant said that she chose to work with QVC because of their personal relationship with viewers.

“I like to have one-on-one with people, and [at QVC] you can have rapport,” Hudson said.”I think you should hear from the consumer and they should hear from you, and they give that intimacy and that one-on-one.”

Aside from her new fashion empire, Hudson also recently signed on to appear on the new season of Smash alongside another ex-American Idol star, Katharine McPhee. She is also currently wrapping the film Lullaby with Amy Adams and Garrett Hedlund and hopes to begin working on a new album in the fall.

The combined workload has left Hudson with, as she confessed, only two days of vacation for the entire summer. “I looked at my schedule the other day and I thought, ‘Oh my God!” she said. At least she’ll look good on the job.
