Cleanup resumes today following storms
(Henryville) — Indiana State Police now say the death toll now stands at 12 people killed in the southern part of the state in Friday’s tornado outbreak. Henryville and Chelsea were slammed by EF-4 tornadoes, while Holton and Pekin were hit by EF-3 twisters and Wadesville was victimized by an EF-2 tornado. Indiana State Police Sergeant Jerry Goodwin called the damage in Henryville “complete destruction.” Marysville was also nearly wiped off the map by the tornadoes.
Toddler dies from storm injuries
(Henryville) — Last week’s storms have claimed its littlest victim. 15-month old Angel Babcock was found wandering in a field after the devastation in the southern Indiana city of Pekin killed her mother, father, 2-month old sister and 3-year-old brother. Angel was taken to a Kentucky hospital in critical condition, but died from her injuries Sunday after she was removed from life support. The story about the toddler made national headlines in the aftermath of the storms and tornadoes which so far have left 12 Indiana residents dead. Emergency personnel and survivors will spend this week cleaning up amid the ruins and searching for more survivors. Donations to assist with funeral expenses for all five members of the family are being accepted any Bank of America branch under the Babcock Relief Fund.
Governor declares a disaster emergency
(Indianapolis) — After spending Saturday surveying damage from last Friday’s storms and tornadoes, Governor Mitch Daniels on Sunday has declared a disaster emergency for eleven counties. Those counties include Clark, Gibson, Harrison, Jefferson, Posey, Ripley, Scott, Shelby, Vanderburgh, Warrick and Washington counties. Officials with the Department of Homeland Security will turn to the task of assessing the total amount of damage before making their recommendations to Governor Daniels regarding a request for federal assistance.
Identities released in shootout with police
(Claxton, TN) — Police in Tennessee have released the names of the two Indiana residents killed in a shootout last week with police. Shanna Richardson and Michael Baker were shot and killed after they led police on a chase following the theft of a tank of gas while driving a stolen truck. WVLT-TV reports deputies had no choice but to open fire when the couple started to shoot near a fire station parking lot in Claxton.
Pacers are on a winning streak
(New Orleans, LA) — The Indiana Pacers are riding a six-game winning streak heading into tonight’s game on the road against the Chicago Bulls. The Pacers defeated New Orleans on Saturday, 102-84 to put together their longest winning streak since March of 2005. Indiana is in second place in the Central Division, five and a half games behind the Bulls. While the Pacers have won six in a row, the Bulls have put together their own five-game winning streak.
