Teams set to play in Super Bowl 46

(Indianapolis)  —  The AFC Champion New England Patriots and the NFC Champion New York Giants will play February 5th at Lucas Oil Stadium in Super Bowl 46.  It’s New England’s fifth trip to the Super Bowl in eleven seasons and its seventh overall.  The New York Giants will see their first trip for the team since stopping the Patriots attempt at a perfect season by defeating them in Super Bowl 42 in Arizona back in 2008.

Group working to stop human trafficking

(Indianapolis)  —  Law enforcement officers will be working to address  human trafficking  activity during Super Bowl 46. One advocacy group, Free International says it will train hotel and motel workers on observing signs that the activity is occurring, especially monitoring teens who are often the targets to become sex slaves.  Governor Mitch Daniels wants to push legislation through to reduce the problem, requesting that lawmakers have a bill ready for him to sign to become law before the Super Bowl which takes place on February 5.

More street restrictions taking place

(Indianapolis) More Super Bowl-related traffic restrictions start this week in downtown Indianapolis. The eastbound lane of Georgia Street will be closed from Meridian Street to Pennsylvania Street beginning on Monday, January 23. The lane was already closed from Illinois Street to Meridian Street. Other closures occurring include Capitol Avenue from Maryland Street to South Street and South Street from Missouri Street to Capitol.

Minors arrested at bar

(Carmel)  —  Ten minors are facing charges this morning after they were caught in a bar over the weekend. Indiana State Excise Police cited the Double Apple Lounge in the 4000 block of 96th Street around  1 a.m. Sunday after a complaint was called in about underage drinking.  Three of the ten minors arrested are 17-years-old; police also arrested David Maldonado, 30, an employee at the bar on an outstanding warrant out of Boone County.

Right to work referendum fails 

(Indianapolis)  —  An amendment in the Indiana Senate calling on a  statewide referendum on the controversial right to work legislation died in the Indiana Senate.  The Senate voted last Friday on legislation that is identical to what will be up for a vote in the House today if Democrats return to the Statehouse today after boycotting session last week. The minority party thinks voters should decide on whether right to work should become law, while majority Republicans want lawmakers to decide.

IU men’s basketball team gets a victory

(Bloomington)  —  Indiana Hoosiers snapped a three-game losing streak after defeating Penn State 73-54 Sunday. The Hoosiers trailed by two at halftime before taking the lead in the second half.  A moment of silence was held at Assembly Hall before tipoff to remember former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who had died just hours before the game began.  The win was the first in two weeks for Indiana, and improved their record to 16-4 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten.

Notre Dame men’s basketball team scores an upset

(South Bend)  —  Notre Dame basketball fans are still happy this morning  after Saturday’s upset of  number-one rated Syracuse, 67-58.  “The South Bend Tribune”reports it was the seventh time since 1968 that Notre Dame has beaten the top-ranked team in the nation at home.  Jack Cooley led Notre Dame with 17 points and ten rebounds, while Scott Martin scored 13 points.  The Irish are now 4-3 in the Big East and 12-8 overall.
