Last year, I wanted to my garden to be fulled with herbs that are flavorful and healthy. I planted oregano in my herb garden, and let me tell you — it was a game-changer! I used it all summer long, adding fresh flavor to my dishes and even experimenting with homemade seasonings, herb butter, and cream cheese. I loved it so much that I can’t wait to grow it again this year.
If you’re thinking about starting or expanding your herb garden, oregano is a must-have. Not only is it easy to grow, but it’s packed with flavor and health benefits that make it a staple in both the kitchen and your wellness routine.
Why Grow Oregano?
Oregano is part of the mint family, and this versatile herb has been used for centuries for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It’s a hardy, woody-stemmed perennial that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, oregano is one of those forgiving plants that’s hard to mess up.
I started my oregano from a small plant, but you can also grow it from seeds, cuttings, or divisions. The key to getting the best flavor is to harvest it before it flowers — that’s when its oils are most potent, giving you that rich, earthy flavor that’s perfect for cooking.
Bringing Oregano to the Kitchen
One of my favorite things about having fresh oregano was how easy it was to elevate my meals. I made my own Italian seasoning blend, which added incredible flavor to pasta dishes, roasted veggies, and even salad dressings.
But I didn’t stop there — I got creative! I whipped up some homemade herb butter that tasted amazing on grilled corn and steaks. And let me tell you, my oregano-infused cream cheese was a hit at brunch — perfect for bagels, crackers, or even as a dip.
Health Benefits of Oregano
Beyond the flavor, oregano offers powerful health benefits. It’s known for its antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties, making it a great herb to keep on hand — especially during the fall season. I dried a batch of oregano at the end of summer and used it all winter long in soups, teas, and immune-boosting remedies.
There’s something so rewarding about knowing the herbs you’re cooking with are not only fresh but also good for your body.
Tips for Growing Oregano
If you’re ready to plant oregano in your garden, here are a few quick tips:
✅ Plant it in full sun for the best growth.
✅ Use well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
✅ Harvest regularly to encourage new growth and keep the flavor strong.
Whether you’re making your own seasoning blends, experimenting with herb butter, or just sprinkling fresh oregano over your favorite dishes, this herb is a must-have.
I’m excited to get back out in my garden this year and make even more delicious creations with oregano — I hope you’ll give it a try, too!
