An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Office has been recommended to be fired for using excessive force in the beating of 15-year-old Brandon Johnson. IMPD Chief Paul Ciesielski is recommending that Officer Jerry Piland be fired from the department for violating IMPD procedures and using excessive force against Johnson, including knee strikes to the head and body and open had slaps to the face after the teen had been subdued by police in the altercation in southern Warren Township May 16th. Piland, who was off duty at the time, lives in the neighborhood responded to the incident, dressed in civilian clothes with only his service revolver as equipment.

Chief Cieselski also recommended that another IMPD officer, Stacy Lettinga be reprimanded for arresting a youth who was standing on his property peacefully protesting the arrest of Johnson and his brother. No sanctions will be levied against the other three officers involved in the incident. More details to come.
