Step 1

Take some time to write down what you really want to do with your life. Put some thought into it. What would you like for people to remember you for? What things do you absolutely want to accomplish? What gifts and abilities do you have that are unique to you and can benefit other people? Who are the people in your life that matter most and that you want to build and grow your relationships with?

  • Step 2

Take an honest look at your fears. Some people procrastinate in life because of things like fear of failure, fear of embarrassment, and somethings even a fear of success (because of the increased responsibilities that go along with it). What would it take to get those fears out of your life? In some cases, it can be the idea of later regret–that you didn’t do something you should have because of fear.

  • Step 3

Find ways to enrich and move your life forward on a daily basis–even if it’s just in very small steps, they do add up over time. Reading, learning something new, making a new friend, challenging yourself with an old or new hobby, and spending time with someone you care about are good examples. If you have some long-term goals in your life, break them down into small and doable daily actions–this will get you closer in a practical way and give you a sense of accomplishment.

  • Step 4

Find perspective and balance with all the areas in your life. If you’re not doing something you love to do, find steps that you can take to get there. The average person spends over 70,000 hours of their lives in some kind of work–you don’t have to be reckless with any changes, but you don’t have to force yourself to be miserable either.

  • Step 5

Hopefully through this process, you’ll begin to find indications of a greater purpose in your life–a gift or perspective that is uniquely yours and can add positively to the lives of other people. This is a process and often doesn’t happen overnight, but over time many people find it if they consciously focus on it.
