Before she jets off to South Africa to film ‘Winnie’ with Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson will be spending time in the studio recording new material.

While the “If This Isn’t Love” singer touted recordings made shortly after the Grammy Awards in February, sources say the direction of her sophomore album did not go over well with record execs during a listening session last week with Hudson being told to essentially ‘try again’.

As previously reported, Hudson was rumored to be trying a more pop-friendly sound on the as-yet-untitled album, something execs demanded be thrown to the side in favor of the Hudson audiences are used to — with soul.

“She definitely had to go back into the studio,” a source tells Gatecrasher. “She’ll be adding some soulful, Aretha Franklin- and Gladys Knight-type songs to the CD.”

While a release date has not been announced, the disc is expected to hit stores fall 2010 joining a myriad of new releases from Kelly Rowland, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz and more.
