Though twerking has been around for a long time, the dance trend has become more mainstream with everybody from Miley Cyrus to Rihanna showing off their twerk team skills. (If you missed RiRi’s seductive moves, here they are).

It’s no wonder the word “Twerk” has just been added to Oxford’s Online Dictionary. They did an excellent job defining the phenomenon that, for most, is hard to put into words:

Twerk (Verb):

Dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.

That about sums it up! Other interesting words that were added this month include “selfie,” “fauxhawk” (which is long overdue), “Emoji,” and several other abbreviations.

Congrats to the hip-hop community – “Twerk” joins “bling” and “bootylicious” as an English word. Of course, congrats to Instagram for their influence in the new “selfie” addition!
