Jamie Foxx is the elder statesmen of the entertainment industry. So while he used to party hard back in the day and still does, he also knows it’s important to tell his younger peers how to take it easy, because the fame can fuck you up.

I sat down with Jamie to talk about his new movie Sleepless (which you can find out more about during our episode of Extra Butter dropping later this week), and he talked about fame and the advice he gives young stars like Chris Brown and Justin Bieber.

“That’s what people don’t understand. Now, when Chris Brown is at my house… and I have to counsel them, you gotta quickly figure out that the only thing that matters is your art,” he said. “That’s the only thing that you owe anybody, you don’t owe your life, you don’t owe them anything other than what you have as an artist.”

He added: “That’s the tricky part that when the fame works on the head, it makes you forget about ‘what’s the reason that I’m actually doing this.’ When you buy into fame, ain’t ever gonna let you live easy. We see what it does to people. It’s tough to turn your back on that and just be about your art, but that’s the best way to approach it.”

It’s good to know people like Jamie are out here being big brothers to the youth.

Sleepless hits theaters on Friday, January 13.
