For the 21st time in 22 years, a Kenyan runner has won the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon.

On an unseasonably cold Saturday in which the temperature was 45 degrees at the start, John Murugu was the first to finish the 41st annual half-marathon. His time was 1 hour, 4 minutes, 53 seconds for the 13.1-mile course that started in Downtown Indianapolis, wound through the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and ended by Military Park.

Murugu won a half-marathon in 1:03:06 a week ago in Louisville, Ky.

Behind him in Indy were Paul Sugut, 1:05:35; Festus Chepkowny, 1:06:41, and Frederick Kiprono, 1:06:55.

Top homegrown finisher was Jordan Kyle in fifth, also in 1:06:55. The 30-year-old Indianapolis resident is a Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate, who earned All-America honors at both Indiana University and Colorado.

Another Kenyan, Margaret Maina, was the women’s champion in 1:15:51. Erin Vegara of Zionsville was fourth in 1:20:13 and Lindsay Cordes of Fort Wayne was fifth in 1:20:20.
