Indianapolis gathers today to say goodbye to former Indianapolis Mayor William “Bill” Hudnut.

A memorial service gets underway Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church located at 7700 North Meridian Street.

After being sworn in on January 1, 1976, Hudnut served a total of 16 years which made him Indy’s longest serving mayor. He’d also served as a congressman and was a Presbyterian minister.

Known for being the architect of Indianapolis’ growth spurt, Hudnut accomplished the gains in the city’s development and visibility on the national scene by closing prominent deals, such as the one he struck to bring the NFL’s Colts to Indy from Baltimore where the team remains a beloved community member. That deal also ushered in a change of the city’s landscape. The Hoosier Dome was built to give the team an attractive place to play.

After his many years of contributions to Hoosiers, he continued a life of public service, serving as the mayor of the town of Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Hudnut died on December 18 in Maryland after battling a lengthy illness at the age of 84.
