Good day to you…

We’ve heard the headlines that the murder rate is high in Chicago, but we must examine our own backyard. Indianapolis’ murder rate continues to climb also. A man who died last week after being found in an east side alley with a head wound has become the city’s 100th homicide of the year. We now know that victim was shot and has been identified as Mohamed DuKuly, 30. Year 2015 was Indy’s bloodiest with a record 144 criminal homicides.

Sixteen families are displaced following a fire at an apartment complex on Indy’s northwest side. Crews were called to the La Joya Apartments Saturday evening. A woman trapped in an upstairs unit dropped her three young children from the balcony to a neighbor below, then jumped to safety herself. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Organizers behind the Indianapolis 9/11 Memorial are asking for donations to expand the site. It currently includes two steel beams from the World Trade Center, but officials now want to add a remembrance from the Pentagon. Of the nine Hoosiers killed in the terrorist attacks on our nation, four were at the World Trade Center and five were at the Pentagon. A well-attended ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of 9/11 was held Sunday at the memorial, which is near the firehouse overlooking the canal on Ohio Street, downtown just east of West Street.

A question looms today. Does Evan Bayh Live In Indianapolis? Bayh is enough of an Indiana resident to make the ballot this November in his bid to return to the U.S. Senate. The Indianapolis Star reports Bayh spends most of his time in a home in Washington D.C. The former senator and former Indiana governor moved there during his decade serving in the Senate. He also stayed there for his time as a D.C. lawyer. Bayh lists his official Indiana home as a condo in north Indy. The paper said Bayh’s residency questions are more political than legal, but also said there are questions nonetheless.

After a busy weekend slamming democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her “basket of deplorables” comments in which she described Donald Trump supporters, Governor and GOP Vice Presidential nominee, Mike Pence, exited the Value Voters Summit stage and is now asking the federal government to help veterans affected by the closure of ITT Technical Institute. He wants the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to reinstate GI Bill benefits for veterans who used them at ITT Tech this year and didn’t complete their education. ITT shut down here in Indy and across the nation earlier this month. Pence says nearly 300 Hoosier veterans and approximately 700 other students were displaced. By the way, the Value Voters Summit is a social conservative political meeting that features right-wing activists.

US-ATTACKS-9/11-ANNIVERSARY

Hillary Clinton is fighting pneumonia. Clinton’s doctor says the Democratic presidential nominee was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday. However, it wasn’t revealed until Sunday after she left a 9/11 ceremony early because she felt “overheated and dehydrated.” A video posted on Twitter is making the rounds. It shows Clinton appearing wobbly and stumbling as aides helped her into a Secret Service vehicle.

One political expert weighed in. Dr. Sean Foreman of Barry University said Clinton’s diagnosis could be an important moment in the 2016 campaign. Foreman said the timing of the pneumonia diagnosis is terrible for the Democratic presidential nominee, pointing out that in the coming weeks, Clinton is going to need all her energy to fight for votes.

Donald Trump Holds Campaign Rally In Las Vegas

In what looks like a surprising twist, Donald Trump’s camp is planning to stay quiet about Clinton’s health status. Multiple outlets report that the Trump campaign has advised surrogates to keep comments to themselves. When asked by reporters Sunday about Clinton’s health episode, Trump remarked that he knew nothing about it. On Monday morning, the Trump camp doubled down on Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” comments asking which of his military supporters was she talking about. In the past, Trump hasn’t held back on the issue of Clinton’s health. The GOP presidential nominee constantly questioned her stamina while out on the campaign trail.

Post the 15th-year observation of the 9/11 attacks, we’re learning today that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is signing a bill extending the period for workers and volunteers hoping to get lost wages and medical benefits from their involvement in the rescue, recovery, and cleanup at Ground Zero. The extension until September 11, 2018 will allow them to receive workers’ comp, disability, and accidental death benefits as a result of their work after the 9/11 attacks.

Samsung wants people who own Galaxy Note 7 smartphones to turn them off and turn them in. The South Korean electronics giant is encouraging the swaps after reports that a problem with the battery can cause the device to catch fire. Samsung says customers will get another device until the company issues new Note 7 models.  Samsung announced a voluntary recall of two and-a-half million Note 7 devices just two weeks after the phones came out.  The airline industry also last week issued a notice saying not to pack the devices in luggage, use or charge them in-flight.

Finally…

A pretty day in the forecast is a part of the great start to this week. The other is Monday morning’s High-5 Rally. During the event, men of the community gather at a school to greet students as they enter their school building, cheering them on and offering “high fives” for encouragement. Today’s event was at George H. Fisher – IPS School #93, in the 7100  block of East 35th Street. Black men and other like-minded men from the community work to boost children’s self-esteem and improve their educational and life outcomes.
