We all woke up to two particularly disturbing stories on Tuesday morning…one local, the other international…

Here…Indianapolis Metro Police are investigating a shooting, one where a sleeping teenaged girl was shot in the face this early Tuesday morning on the city’s near north side. Various media reports say the 18-year-old was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom in her home in the 3500 block of North Illinois Street. IMPD officers were out canvassing the neighborhood trying to find out why someone would shoot at the home and who that someone might be. So far, they’ve found several shell casings from an assault style weapon. The teen is currently listed in stable condition at I-U/Methodist Hospital.  Any info on this crime? Call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.

Elsewhere in the world…tragedy…

The death toll has risen to at least 31 by mid-morning with the capital of the European Union in complete chaos after what Belgium’s prime minister is calling an act of “terror.” Two explosions rocked the airport in Brussels forcing a mass evacuation. Another blast hit a metro commuter station. Belgian news media report shots were fired and people were heard shouting in Arabic just before the incident at the main departure hall. This deadly incident has forced the shut down of all subway service. The prime minister says, “What we feared has happened, we were hit by blind attacks.”  Today’s attack comes just four days after authorities in Brussels arrested a suspect in November’s deadly terrorist attacks in Paris.

President Barack Obama is condemning the deadly terrorist attacks in Brussels.  Speaking from Havana, the president offered America’s thoughts and prayers to the people of Belgium. He called the coordinated attacks outrageous and vowed to do whatever is necessary to help Belgium authorities investigate the incidents. Obama said the world must stand together in the fight against terrorism.

Meanwhile… Cubans who oppose the Castro regime say they hope they can attend a meeting with President Obama later today, even though some of them were arrested Sunday. They were all released Sunday night.  Leaders of the dissident groups say they hope the U.S. can help Cubans get access to more information and improve connection to the Internet.

Back here in the U.S.—a reaction to today’s terrorist attacks in Brussels. Due to these attacks on various transportation systems, expect to see more visible and increased police and security presence at airports, train and subway stations.

Back here in Indiana…

The body of fallen Deputy Carl Koontz is back in Howard County.  He was escorted from here in Indy to Kokomo Monday afternoon. Koontz’s autopsy shows he died from a gunshot wound to the pelvis. Koontz and Sergeant Jordan Buckley were shot early Sunday while serving a warrant in Russiaville. Buckley was released from the hospital Monday. Koontz’s funeral arrangements are pending.

The Indianapolis Fire Department is also mourning the loss of former Chief Brian Sanford. Sanford died on Monday at the age of 59 after a five-year battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Mayor Joe Hogsett remembered Sanford fondly calling him “a remarkable chief, a dedicated public servant and a mentor to so many in the department.”

The building that was the Flying J gas station on Indianapolis’ southwest side cost $3 million and everything inside cost another $1 million. Investigators were back on the scene Monday attempting to determine a cause and say the price tag for the fire that gutted the gas station hit $4 million. Based on their work, firefighters say they think the flames started outside a Denny’s attached to the gas station and quickly spread out of control.

In politics…

The 2016 presidential campaign rolls on today with contests in three more states.  Democrats and Republicans will cast votes in Arizona’s primary and Utah’s caucuses.  Meantime, Democratic voters will caucus in Idaho.

And an update on Flint…

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is out with his most extensive plan yet for Flint.  Yesterday, the governor released a new 75-point action plan to address the city’s water contamination crisis. The plan includes infrastructure improvements, creating a data-sharing agreement with state and federal environmental agencies and establishing a protocol for a drinkability declaration for Flint water.

Indianapolis Weather…

Windy with a High 64 degrees.

Finally…

In a tale of what’s wrong with some people… A car dealership in Florida is keeping a closer eye on its cars after a man stole a BMW because the dealer wouldn’t let him buy the car with his food stamp card. The 36-year-old man stole the keys to 60 cars along with the Beamer from the Pompano Beach dealership after he was told his EBT card wouldn’t close the deal. Police caught him about an hour up the coast, when he ran out of gas.
